Tracking Down Cooling Troubles

Cooling troubles are almost always due to combustion gasses leaking into the coolant.  Be sure to check that first and repair the block, heads or gaskets as required.  If there are no gasses present in the coolant, check the radiator for the following:

  • Internal cleanliness

  • External air blockage

  • Air passing around the radiator rather than through it

  • Fan blade too far away or no shroud

Consider using head gaskets that have water holes which route the coolant to the rear of the block before much is allowed to go into the head.  Restriction of the pump outlet water helps maintain positive pressure in the block, which helps prevent steam pockets.  Thermostats work well for this, or restrictors with approximately 9/16" diameter hole.

Rodding Your Flaty

There are lots of things you can do to your engine to increase horsepower and customize or personalize it's looks.  They all take time and cost money, and usually lots of both.  Try to be honest with yourself and know what you want to accomplish and how much money you want to spend.
